Inside story about life on steamship Waverley

Senior crew to give ‘unique presentation’ in Glasgow

She is an icon of the Clyde and a symbol of Glasgow’s maritime heritage.

But how much do you know about life onboard the Waverley paddle steamer, and what it takes to keep this remarkable ship afloat?

Well, you can find out later this month at a unique presentation to be delivered by two of the ship’s senior crew.

Captain Dominic McCall has been in command of the World’s last seagoing paddle steamer for three summer seasons while Chief Purser, Andrew Comrie, has been a Waverley crew member since 2021.

Both are set to deliver a talk on Thursday February 20 in Glasgow to tell their story and share their experiences of working and living aboard the famous steamer.

Privilege

Capt McCall said: “It has been a privilege to have been in command of Waverley since 2022 and I am delighted to have the opportunity to tell the inside story on what it takes to sail the ship and plan her extensive programme of sailings.

“Sailing and operating a ship like Waverley depends on team work as well as the ongoing support from many individuals around the UK.

“By giving this presentation, I hope to share and explain what it takes to continue to keep Waverley sailing.”

Chief Purser Andrew will also be sharing his involvement with the iconic steamship. Andrew will share some of his personal highlights and the unique challenges which come along when things don’t go fully to plan.

Andrew said: “Every day on Waverley is different, with the ship attracting passengers from over 70 ports and piers around the country.

The talk will be hosted by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and is open to the public. It will start at 7:15pm at the Renfield Centre, 260 Bath Street, Glasgow and is free to attend.

There will be a short Q&A session following the presentation and those attending will be able to pick up a copy of Waverley’s 2025 Scottish Sailings timetable.

Waverley is currently berthed in Glasgow undergoing annual maintenance and refurbishment works.
